State retracts claim that refinery ‘explosion’ burned 3 men
DELAWARE CITY, Del. (AP) – The state has retracted a statement describing the incident that hospitalized three workers at a Delaware refinery as a “minor explosion.”
The News Journal reports that Chief Deputy State Fire Marshal Robert Fox said in a statement Wednesday that “further investigation revealed that what was originally described as an explosion was actually a release of heated product under pressure.”
Fox didn’t respond to questions seeking further information.
A Delaware City Refinery spokeswoman had disputed there was an explosion Tuesday, but didn’t explain how the men were injured. PBF Energy President Matt Lucey said on an earnings call before the transaction that three contractors suffered injuries during “routine maintenance.”
The newspaper couldn’t reach contractor Nooter Construciton for comment.
The three workers were hospitalized at a Pennsylvania burn unit in varying conditions.
