Maine Maritime wants to create an annex in Bucksport
BUCKSPORT, Maine (AP) – Maine Maritime Academy wants to create a training center at the former paper mill site in Bucksport.
MMA aims to create a Center for Professional Mariner Development at a two-story brick building that it’s negotiating to buy. The move would create an annex to the main campus in Castine.
The Bangor Daily News reports that the center would train students; help mariners maintain required certifications; and train firefighters, oil-rig workers and others in fire safety and water rescue.
Negotiations are ongoing with property owner AIM Development, which is a subsidiary of a Canadian scrap metal firm that bought the site for $58 million in 2015.
